Drawings & Studies

When I work out of doors, it is a different discipline that I pursue than that which I follow when painting in my Studio.  Inside it is the finely wrought Watercolour, or Watercolour & Gouache painting that my work involves, whether highly detailed Seascapes & Landscapes or looser work such as heavy Seas, crashing waves  & Storms.  Outdoors I prefer to draw with graphite pencil & goose-quill pen using walnut ink, many times with sepia washes & heightened with white gouache or chalk, on toned paper, and sometimes with pastel, or black & red chalks.  For this purpose I have had paper of my own choosing specially bound into Sketchbooks.  Many times back in the Studio, these Sketchbook pages are worked up into drawings & colour studies for exhibition and for galleries, and some of these are shown here.  I have learned much by looking hard at the drawings of JMW Turner, Claude Lorrain, the 17th c. Dutch Landscape Artists, Rembrandt amongst others, and there is yet much to learn on this fascinating journey.
