Though I am unable to attend the Exhibition, I will have the three small Watercolours shown below, in the Exhibition.
Painting #1 - C1456 - "Evening Light over Lyme Bay": I never got to spend the time I would have liked, in the Lyme Regis area. I usually was on the way from Cornwall to Lymington, where I had paintings in a Gallery for a number of years. The roads in the area were not conducive for speed, so I kept saying, "One of these days …" I did occasionally make brief stops, and this Evening was one of those times, with the Sun lowering behind The Undercliff, and the Moon already risen in the East. I take time to enjoy these few moments of Colour & Light, even though I will have a couple of hours of night driving to do, and I wish safe harbour to the lone sail far out in the Bay with night coming on. And for me, the fossils on these shores will have to wait for another time. They wait for me still.
Painting #2 - C1458 - "Blustery Afternoon on the Channel Coast, East from Charmouth": A few weeks after I enjoyed the "Evening Light over Lyme Bay" (see my Watercolour C1456), I again stopped on Lyme Bay, this time at Charmouth, East of Lyme Regis, and took a stroll to get a feel for what searching for fossils here might be all about. It was blustery, and chill, and the occasional burst of sunlight through the broken cloud, held my interest as much as inspecting fallen rocks for whatever primeval treasures they might contain. I watched others, more serious, on the same quest, while others were really out just walking their dog. After picking up a few uninspiring samples, I made a couple of quick sketches, and a few photographs and headed for home. This might have been my one venture at fossil hunting on Lyme Bay for within a year, after more than 30 in Britain, I returned Home to the States to live.
Painting #3 - C1459 - "Point Break Evening over Harlyn Bay" (North Cornwall): Upon my move from Boscastle, down the coast twenty miles to Treyarnon Bay, an old surfer acquaintance of mine was explaining to me the various wave types and qualities that a surfer would recognize, and presumably look for. Most of what he told me has long gone, since as an Artist I have different reasons for looking at the Sea. However, I do remember his explanation of a Point Break, and giving Harlyn Bay as an example. I was reminded of that on this wonderful evening walk, after the showers had passed away to the East, and watching a lone surfer heading out to ride the waves and seeing in them qualities that only he & those like him can see. For me it is the evening glow on the clouds moving off, and the wonderful warm light on the far fields contrasting with the cool shadows of the foreground. Two individuals seeing the same World through different eyes, but united, I suspect, by the sheer beauty of this wonderful evening.
